Announcing Acorn Park, Rockville Campus

I am  thrilled to share a major announcement that will significantly enhance the outdoor experiences of all of our children and community members. Evergreen is embarking on a major playground renovation, and I am delighted to introduce you to the future heart of our campus—Acorn Park. Construction is expected late Winter 2024.

We believe outdoor play is essential for children’s social, emotional and physical development.

Inspired by Maria Montessori's appreciation for the outdoors, Acorn Park is designed to complement and enrich our awesome classroom Montessori programs.

Why Acorn Park? Acorn Park pays homage to the two majestic heritage oak trees on the playground. Their stature, shade and abundant acorn production provide fitting metaphors for the nurturing, growth-oriented strength of our community.

Playgrund Features Acorn Park will be an all-natural play space, featuring robinia wood play structures designed by the Danish company Kompan. The playground will offer a wide variety of physical movement including swinging, climbing, sliding, balancing, and bouncing. Additionally, there will be spaces for creative play, construction, and contemplation. Features include a climbing structure, net swing, music station, sandbox, outdoor blocks, wagon and more. The space will offer abundant opportunities for cognitive, social, emotional and physical development. See images below.

A Large Community Gathering Hub A 179-foot retaining wall will provide a level play surface. This will make Acorn Park ideal for community-wide school events and more. The enlarged area, bridging two spaces currently separated by a fence-- and incorporating additional land from the Living Faith property-- will significantly expand the current footprint and offer more space for exploration, celebration and collaboration. The project will also include a new, safe concrete entrance walkway, entrance gate, seating and a premium aluminum security fence.

Construction Timeline While we're eagerly anticipating the transformation, the construction timeline hinges on the shipment schedule of equipment. We will keep you informed and provide updates as soon as more details become available. During construction, we will leverage our proximity to Rockcrest Park for regular outdoor time.

Special Thanks This project would not be possible without the hard work and vision of Dan Dombkowski, chair of our Trustee’s Building and Grounds Committee, Page Castle of Kompan, Daniel Younger of Younger Services and Michael Lidell of Living Faith Lutheran. The project is a reflection of Evergreen School's commitment to our partnership with the Living Faith congregation and an investment in our long-term future here.

We are more than excited about this project and the positive impact it will have on our students' development and our school community's spirit. Thank you for your continued enthusiasm for our school, our teachers and our Mission to develop the intellect, independence, confidence and compassion of every student.
