Gourmet Chefs cooking camp will take kids on a culinary adventure through the exploration of basic skills used for the rest of their lives. Evergreen welcomes a diverse population in a safe and nurturing setting. All activities are developmentally appropriate and directed by trained staff. These days more and more kids are becoming interested in food and cooking. Our Gourmet Chefs will aim to tap into that interest by creating an environment in which culinary exploration is balanced with important basic skills students will use for the rest of their lives. In each completely interactive class, our Gourmet Chefs in training will prepare an entrée, healthy snack or dessert. They will learn many of the basics of cooking, such as how to read and reference a recipe, proper measuring and knife skills and multiple cooking techniques including baking, grilling and sautéing. As the students gain culinary knowledge they will also be expanding their vocabulary, reading comprehension, math and logic skills and their ability to work as a team. Please note that there will be no swimming or fieldtrips for the Gourmet Chefs Program.

Gourmet Chefs Cooking Camp Weekly Themes 2012
Week 1: June 18-22Gourmet Chef Challenge
Just like on everybody’s favorite cooking show, each day of this week long camp will focus on one mystery ingredient. Using that item, the Gourmet Chefs will make mouth-watering specialties, traditional favorites and explore new ingredients, tastes and combinations. Are you up to the challenge?
Week 2: June 25-29
Mexican Fiesta
Mexican and Southwestern foods are among the most popular cuisines in America. In this summer camp, Gourmet Chefs will learn to make their favorite Mexican items, like salsas, guacamole, tortilla chips, tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, empanadas, fajitas and the list goes on and on and on!
Week 3: July 2-6 (No Camp on July 4th)
Sandwiches—A Meal in Hand
Not your basic Peanut Butter and Jelly! Sandwiches can be hot or cold, in a wrap, baked in a bun, contain fruits, veggies, meat or no meat. They can be a quick snack after school or a filling meal all on their own. Come join us this week as Gourmet Chefs explore the sensational sandwich.
Week 4: July 9-13
Baking Basics
Probably one of the first things kids help make in the kitchen is cookies. In this week-long summer camp, the Gourmet Chefs will move beyond cookies to quick breads, muffins, yeast breads, pies and cakes. Sweet!
Week 5: July 16-20
You Are What You Eat
We’ve all heard the old saying “you are what you eat”, but have you ever really thought about what it really means or how it affects you? In this camp we will decipher the health information on food packaging, learn the basics of proper nutrition and create healthy meals that will not only make us feel good but will taste good too!
Week 6: July 23-27
Try A Taste
Have you ever gone to a restaurant and EVERYTHING on the menu looks yummy? Well, you can’t order everything…or can you? In this fun summer camp we are going to explore the idea of Tapas or Bocas—small tastes or appetizers that can be combined to make full meals. A great way to try a taste of everything!
Week 7: July 30-August 3
International Taste Sensation
One of Gourmet Chefs most popular offerings—once again we will travel the world as we cook our way through the cuisines of several different countries and regions. This summer we will “visit” India, Australia and New Zealand, Spain and Great Britain.
Week 8: August 6-10
Pasta! Pasta! Pasta!
From favorites like Macaroni and Cheese and ravioli, to summer-friendly pasta salads to desserts (desserts?!?) like Apple Kugel, pasta is versatile and delicious! Let Gourmet Chefs show you how much fun a weeks’ worth of pasta can be!
Week 9: August 13-17
Breakfast All Day Long
Everyone knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day—whether you eat if for breakfast, lunch or dinner!! From Breakfast Burritos to Stuffed French Toast to Granola Parfaits, there are so many delicious & nutritious recipes out there it’s easy to eat breakfast all day long!
