"There is nothing in the intellect which was not first in some way in the senses, and senses being explorers of the world, opens the way to knowledge."
- Maria Montessori

The Montessori Philosophy

We believe that:

Children have a natural curiosity and a desire to learn.
Each child has a unique cognitive ability and drive.
Each child learns in different ways (auditory, visual, kinesthetic, sensory) and at different paces.
Children need structure, routine and guidance to feel secure and confident.
Internal security frees a child to explore and develop in a natural progression.
Children yearn to become a part of a community based on respect.
Children learn through use of all senses involving the whole self.
Students benefit from a wide variety of information and experiences in a rich environment.
Children need guidance on a path toward internalizing discipline, responsibility and respect.
Imagination and creativity based on real images lead to the capacity for abstraction.

Therefore we serve the child this way:

Nurturing and protecting the development of the individual.
Furnishing manipulative learning materials to introduce and reinforce concepts.
Empowering children to work, within guidelines, on their choice of materials.
Presenting lessons at the academic and interest level of each student.
Giving lessons as subject and situation dictate (in terms of size of group, length of lesson, number of repetitions).
Honoring each child's uniqueness and encouraging their individuality and strengths.
Allowing children the time they need to comfortably complete their work.
Offering lessons to students during the time in their development when they can easily assimilate the information (their sensitive period).
Integrating academic subjects.
Incorporating specialty teachers and consultants, as need dictates.
Providing mixed age classes based on a three year program
Ensuring a safe, attractive and accessible environment in each classroom.

Our goal is to develop a child who:

Is working toward the ability to resolve conflict and come up with unique solutions to problems.
Is self disciplined, respectful, and aware of self worth.
Is able to think critically and independently.
Has an internalized sense of responsibility.
Is comfortable taking initiative .
Works collaboratively.
Is able to recognize and manage conflict appropriately.
Has the necessary tools, skills and knowledge for the next level of their education.
Appreciates and draws upon a multi-disciplinary approach.
Is integrated, centered, lively and happy.
Uses and values various forms of expression and communication.
Finds joy in learning as a life long experience.
