About Us : Why Evergreen : What is Montessori

What is Montessori

"There is nothing in the intellect which was not first in some way in the senses, and senses being explorers of the world, opens the way to knowledge."
- Maria Montessori

The Montessori Philosophy

Children are born with a natural curiosity and a desire to learn.  Each child is unique; he/she learns in his/her own way at his/her own pace, but all children learn best through use of all of their senses and involving their whole selves.  They benefit from a wide variety of information and experiences in a rich environment.

Children yearn to be nurtured and respected within a caring and safe community.  Only when these basic needs are met are children available to explore and develop in a natural progression.  We honor each child and encourage his/her individuality and strengths.  We provide manipulative learning materials to introduce and reinforce concepts within a safe, attractive, and accessible classroom environment.  And we provide structure, routine, and guidance to help children feel secure and confident.

Our goals are to guide children in such a way that they are able to internalize discipline and responsibility, to respect themselves and others, to think critically and independently, to take initiative, to work collaboratively, to solve problems, to recognize and manage conflict appropriately, and to find joy in learning as a life-long experience.
