About Us : Policies : MedicationMedication
Evergreen School follows Maryland statutes regarding medication. No prescription or over-the-counter medications (including throat lozenges and vitamins) may be given to any student for any reason without having written permission from a doctor and a parent.
Students may require administration of medicine at school from time to time. Only our Designated Nurse and designated staff members may dispense medication. You must give the first dose of any new prescription or over-the-counter medication to your child prior to your child coming to school. (This regulation does not include PRN or emergency medications, such as an Epi-pen.) Designated staff members may dispense prescribed medications only when parents have supplied the school with a properly completed Medication Administration Authorization form. This form is available in the School office as well as on our website.
Medications must be labeled by the pharmacist and show the name of the prescribing physician, the medication, its dosage, and the duration of use. If you are reluctant to leave all of the medication at school, ask your pharmacist for an additional properly labeled container.
Medications must be brought to the School office by an adult and handed to a staff member. Do not send medications to school in your child’s backpack or lunchbox. All medications are kept in a locked cabinet; this cabinet is under the authority of our Designated Nurse. Medications are dispensed only by our Designated Nurse, designated School personnel, or the student’s parents/guardians.
Non-prescribed medications or over-the-counter drugs, including lotions (except sunscreen), eye drops, and homeopathic remedies, also require a Medication Administration Authorization form with signatures of both the physician and the parents/guardians.
